On Tuesday, the launch of the 2025 Girls in STEM Club marked a pivotal step in promoting gender diversity within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This inspiring initiative is made possible through the generous support of the Rotary Club of Bendigo, its industry partner McClure Civil Management, and a $5,000 sponsorship from the Peter Ryal Trust, ensuring the program’s continued success and growth.
Around 30 enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 girls from schools across Bendigo gathered at Discovery Science and Technology Centre for the first engineering workshop of the year, radiating excitement and curiosity. Their eagerness was evident, setting the stage for a day full of hands-on learning and exploration that would fuel their passion for STEM and open new doors for future possibilities.
The workshop began with a captivating video that brought the principles of gravity and friction to life through marble runs. The video sparked the girls’ imagination, leading them to their challenge: design a track that would allow a glass marble to travel from start to finish in under 7 seconds, using the materials provided.
With focus and determination, the girls quickly dove into the task, brainstorming, testing, and adjusting their designs. Working collaboratively in teams, they exchanged ideas, solved problems, and fine-tuned their creations. While some teams succeeded faster than others, all demonstrated impressive teamwork, resilience, and innovation.
Watching them apply problem-solving skills and collaborate was inspiring, a testament to the potential that lies within when given the right opportunities. The workshop underscored the importance of providing girls with access to STEM, showing how it can ignite their curiosity and drive.
This event was just the beginning of an exciting journey for the Girls in STEM Club. With continued support, the girls are set to break barriers, inspire others, and build a future filled with growth, discovery, and success.
