Another Tuesday at Discovery Science and Technology Centre was filled with excitement as the Australian Research Centre of Excellence led the session. The girls eagerly gathered around, ready to dive into the fascinating world of light and holograms.
The session began with a hands-on Pepper’s Ghost illusion. As the ghostly figure appeared in the glass, the girls’ eyes lit up with wonder. It felt like magic, yet they knew it was science at work. Laughter and awe filled the room as the girls tried the trick for themselves, delighted by the illusion’s simplicity and effect.
Next, they explored the power of fibre optics, sending light through strands of glass to see how it could travel long distances without losing brightness. The technology was simple, yet its potential was limitless. The girls were amazed at how something so small could have such a powerful impact.
Then, they moved on to spectroscopy, using light to identify different materials. They were stunned to see how light could reveal hidden details in everyday objects, sparking a new appreciation for the science around them. They realized how much more they could discover by simply looking at the world through a different lens.
The most exciting part came when they explored polarization. With just a few filters, they could change how light behaved, revealing hidden patterns and colours. It felt like unlocking another layer of reality, which filled their minds with endless possibilities.
Finally, each girl created her own hologram, amazed by how a few simple steps could transform a flat image into a mesmerizing 3D illusion. By the end of the session, they had not only seen light in a new way but also glimpsed the future. Excited and inspired, they knew this was just the beginning of their journey in STEM.
Registration is now open for the next term of the Girls in STEM Club at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre, available to girls in Years 5 and 6. For more details and to register, please reach out to GM Alissa Van Soest at manager@discovery.asn.au or use the QR code in the flyer.
