Building Bridges and Bonds: A Session of Teamwork and Engineering

Updated: Oct 24

The fourth term of the Girls into STEM Club launched on Tuesday with an exhilarating bridge-building session.  The girls, divided into teams of four, to tackle the challenge of “The Floor is Lava.”  Their mission was simple yet daunting: cross the 12-meter auditorium using only five pieces of paper. With infectious determination and laughter, they strategized and communicated, rallying each other with every step.  In no time, they navigated the “lava,” high-fiving and celebrating their success with gleeful shouts echoing through the room.

With spirits soaring, the group’s focus was shifted to the infamous da Vinci Bridge, crafted from paddle pop sticks.  The atmosphere buzzed with creativity as the girls meticulously designed their structures.  Watching them channel their inner engineers was inspiring.  They seamlessly blended creativity and critical thinking, collaborating to overcome obstacles.

The ultimate challenge lay ahead: building the longest bridge possible using paper, paddle pop sticks, masking tape, and straws, all while ensuring it could support the weight of a toy dinosaur.  Excitement crackled in the air as they brainstormed ideas, measuring and testing their designs.  Laughter erupted when a few bridges collapsed, sparking moments of quick redesign and collaborative problem-solving that only fuelled their enthusiasm.

As the night flew by, it became evident that the girls were not merely learning about bridge building.  They were discovering the true power of teamwork, creativity, and resilience. Each laugh and every bridge constructed forged connections that would last well beyond the session. By the end, they had built not just bridges of wood and paper, but also strengthened the bonds of friendship, creating cherished memories that would linger long after the last paper was laid down.
