A Sticky Science Adventure: Exploring Slime at the Girls into STEM Club

Tuesday marked the final session of the year for the Girls into STEM Club at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre.  By popular demand, the theme was slime, featuring two exciting types that had the girls eager to experiment.

The first slime was made from PVA glue, food colouring, and borax as an activator.  The girls added three drops of their chosen colours to the glue.  Next, they added borax as the activator, which gradually transformed the PVA into a polymer.  As the borax was added, the slime became a smooth, easy-to-shape mass.  They quickly learned that too much borax would make the slime too firm, and finding the right balance was key.

The second slime was made from cornflour and water, with food colouring added once again.  After achieving the right consistency, the girls were challenged to pass the slime without turning it into a watery mess.  The fun continued when they were asked to punch the slime.  What seemed like a liquid instantly transformed into a bouncy, solid mass, introducing them to the fascinating properties of non-Newtonian fluids.  The girls were amazed by how the slime’s behaviour changed with a simple tap.

Excited about their creations, the girls eagerly asked to take the slime home to continue experimenting.  After a fun-filled scientific session, female engineers from McClure Civil Management surprised the participants by handing out bags of lollies to everyone.  They ended the day with a thrilling ride down the vertical slide, leaving with a sense of wonder and accomplishment.

The session was a resounding success, sparking curiosity and offering a memorable hands-on lesson in science.  A special thank you to Alissa, Briga, and the entire team at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre for their dedication in making these sessions such a success.
