The AusNep Foundation Inc. and the Rotary Club of Bendigo, proudly supported by the Nepal Consulate Office in Melbourne, were delighted to hold a Welcome Session in the City of Greater Bendigo for the Ambassador of Nepal to Australia, Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa.

The Hon. Consul General of Nepal to Victoria, Mr Chandron Yonzon, was in attendance along with the accompanying delegation, government officials, esteemed community leaders, members of Bendigo’s Nepalese communities and wider community, and media personnel.

The Welcome to Country was performed by Ms Karen Smith, a Dja Dja Wurrung Clan member followed by the welcome speech from Ms Tejaswi Giri. Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa lit the ceremonial Panas and Mr Umesh Shrestha, President of AusNep Foundation, presented ceremonial Khata Shawls to Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa and Special Guests.

The Rotary Club of Bendigo presented their clean water, micro-finance and disease prevention projects in Nepal and highlighted positive impacts arising from a training and education scholarship underway in Kathmandu; the importance of collaboration with AusNep Foundation Inc. and Rotary Clubs in Nepal was highlighted. The AusNep Foundation Inc. outlined their project work in the local community before discussing the school building project in the remote village of Mulabari and their collaborative work with the Rotary Club of Bendigo. A colourful, self-choreographed Nepalese traditional dance was then skilfully performed by Ms Subrena Shrestha. Councillor James Williams (City of Greater Bendigo), the Hon. Consul General Mr. Yonzon, and Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa presented warm and friendly speeches before the event was concluded by Mr Umesh Shrestha. Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa and the delegation party took a keen interest in all projects presented at the welcome session and sincerely thanked everyone for their work in Nepal.

The event concluded with an official group photograph and refreshments. A sincere thank you to everyone for making the Welcome Session for Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa so successful; special thanks to Mr Adrian McMahon for organising and generously providing The Bendigo Club venue and refreshments for the Nepalese Ambassador’s Welcome Session.

The Rotary Club of Bendigo undertook a successful study tour to Nepal in 2016 and has commenced preliminary planning for a return study tour in 2018. The club is proud of its collaboration with AusNep Foundation Inc. and wishes to consolidate the warm partnerships and friendships which have been established and will continue to grow into the future.
