People with a purpose

Broadly Speaking... 15 May 2018

What a wonderful meeting we had on Tuesday, 15th May.   A capacity attendance requiring the addition of another table, many visitors, a presentation and two inspiring speakers.

We were delighted to welcome Greg Ross, Past District Governor, from the Rotary Club of North Balwyn, 4 members from the Rotary Club of Bendigo South, Joan McMahon, wife of Bryan, and Kathie Veitch, Companion of Frank, along with our guest speakers, Donna Aranyi from The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation and Maree Pearce, a Bendigo mother who has experienced the extraordinary care given by the Hospital.

Greg Ross had come to present Frank Lean with a Companion Award for his contributions to Australian Rotary Health.   Frank was totally unaware this was going to happen and his reaction was a joy to watch.   Congratulations Frank – a great effort.

Our Guest Speaker was Donna Aranyi, Philanthropy Executive Major Gifts, The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.   Donna has been involved with the Hospital for many years, prior to which she was involved in the Entertainment Industy.

Although she found the Industry interesting it did not satisfy her need to be helping people.   She is an extremely vital woman, passionately interested in the work of the RCH and is rewarded by knowing that desperately ill children receive the best care there – care they could not receive anywhere else.   She gave us statistics relating to the number of children from the Bendigo area who have needed the services provided at RCH, at which point she called Maree Pearce to the microphone.   Maree spoke with deep emotion about her experience when, had it not been for the skills of the medical staff at the RCH, she would have lost her son, Xavier.   RCH was the only hospital which was able to diagnose and treat her little boy to help him back to health.   Today he is a normal young adult and Maree expressed her gratitude.

Our Club has had experience with the Hospital this year during the illness of little Brishti Shreshna, daughter of our member Umesh and Jesmin.    Sadly Brishti did not respond to treatment and passed away on 12th March aged 6 years.    Umesh and Jesmin have expressed a wish that their daughter's name is not forgotten and it was therefore my privilege to be able to grant their wish.   We gave Donna a cheque for $5,000 and a plaque will be erected in the ward in which Brishti received care – the wording of which will be decided in the next few weeks, but will be in memory of that brave little girl.  Following Donna's speech, several of our members gave an account of their own personal need for the Hospital and their deep gratitude for the care their child received.

Thank you Donna for a most enlightening insight into the work of The Royal Children's Hospital.

On Sunday, 13th May, I attended the Cluster Meeting – my last as your President - held at Camp Getaway.   There are some exciting plans ahead for Bendigo and we will be able to share them with you at a later date.

Word of the week was one completely unknown to me – supplied by Sue Wheeler.

I am really not sure how to pronounce it -  solicstagia - meaning 'fear of climate change'.  Thank you Sue.

And our inspirational saying -   Everything is possible, if you have faith to try.

Today you dream your dearest wish – tomorrow touch the sky.
