People with a purpose

Broadly Speaking 27 March 2018

What does Easter mean to you?  Perhaps it is the Christian meaning. Easter, also known as Pascha (Greek/Latin) or Resurrection Sunday is a Festival and Holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  For a Christian it is the most holy time of the year when Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose again three days later.

Is it the Easter Bunny bringing Easter Eggs, traditionally given on Easter Sunday to indicate rebirth?  Are you looking forward to watching your children or grandchildren hunt for the hidden eggs and the delight on their face when they find one, or two or.......

Or is it another opportunity to participate in the wonderful Bendigo Easter Fair?

Our Guest Speaker today, Rotarian Doug Lougoon told us some of the history of the Easter Fair in which the Chinese Association has been involved since the mid1880's.

Our Chinese Bendigonians have supported and donated thousands of dollars to the Bendigo Hospital over all those years.   What a wonderful, generous group of people and how fortunate are we to have them among us.  Our iconic Chinese Dragons have been involved in the street procession all that time – beginning with one named

Moon Face, followed by Loong at the time of Federation in 1901.  Technically his name is Gum Loong and he is followed by Sun Loong.    Plans are well advanced in making Sun Loong's successor – Dai Gum Loong (Big Golden Dragon) – which should be ready for the 2019 Bendigo Easter Fair.    The foresight which has seen the development of the Golden Dragon Museum with the attached Sacred Gardens has made Bendigo the envy of the World – and plans are well in hand for an $18 - $20 million dollar redevelopment.    Congratulations to all those who have been involved and are continuing to be involved with this massive, innovative project.  Thank you so much Doug.   We were somewhat light on numbers at the meeting today because so many of our members were at the Town Hall hanging the paintings in preparation for the our Easter Art Show.   Thank you all.

I would encourage all of our members to participate in the Bendigo Easter Fair – to visit the Golden Dragon Museum – to watch the Awakening of the Dragon –  to watch the Torchlight Procession and the Easter Procession – to visit the Y's Book Fair and pick up a bargain – and to support our Easter Art Show from Thursday night through to Monday.        Let's make this the best Easter yet.

And...... have you purchased your ticket for the Gala Opening and Awards Night of the Rotary Club of Bendigo, 50th Annual Easter Art Show on Thursday, 29th March?  There are over 800 paintings on display – delicious food will be served and you will have a night to remember.    Please come along and bring all your friends.

Don't forget - our Tuesday lunchtime meeting will be held at the Bendigo Town Hall on 3rd April. I hope to see you there – we will draw the winners of the raffle – maybe it will be you?

Whatever Easter means to you and however you celebrate the Easter break, I wish you happiness and a wonderful time with your family.

Please download 'Rotary in Action' from iTunes.    So easy – costs so little and could mean so much to us as 'People with a Purpose'.

Our Changeover is on 24th June and we are now beginning to prepare for the Annual Report.  Please will Chairmen of all Committees prepare a report and send it to Noel Hobley so that he can begin to prepare the layout.    Thank you.

Our first Rotary Market will be held in the grounds of the BSE on 22nd April.   As well as a promotional exercise we can use this as a fund-raiser for our club.   We have the opportunity to have several stalls if we have sufficient willing workers.   At the Conference in Warrnambool Rotarians were referred to 'as the sausage people' because we are renowned for our sausage sizzles.    If the Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdale is not having a bar-b-que we could do that.   We will be having a gnome stall.   Do you have any other suggestions?   Please let Libby know ASAP – she is heading overseas on 15th April and needs to get everything organised before she goes.

Word of the week is – velleity – meaning a mere wish unaccompanied by an effort to attain it.

And our inspirational saying – 'We rise by lifting Others' – Robert Ingersell.

I will see you at the Gala Opening of the Rotary Club of Bendigo's 50th Annual

Art Show – and until then, 'may the sun shine warm upon your face and the wind be always at your back'

President Valerie.
