Broadly Speaking 7 November 2017
We celebrated the Melbourne Cup in style at our Rotary luncheon on Tuesday. Sharyn Smith and Tilaka deZilva filled the room with glamour - lovely outfits complimented by beautiful hats – and Wayne Smith and Rod McDonald also looked very spiffy – it could be thought that Rod had stolen some of Flemington's famous roses to adorn his hat!
Our Race Caller Par Excellence, Bryan McMahon excelled himself, but alas, did not predict the winner of the Melbourne Cup this year. However, he did receive a telephone call from 'Susan' in Samoa sending greetings. We enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our six team members in Apia also celebrated the Melbourne Cup – but at 8.00 pm that night and in Samoan style. After successfully renovating school rooms on the island of Savaii and facilitating workshops with Women in Business on Upolo, Joy, Garry, Tom, Larrie, Glenn and Rhonda return to Australia early Wednesday morning and we look forward to hearing of their adventures.
We sang 'Happy Birthday' to long serving member Bruce Perrin who is celebrating his birthday on Wednesday, 8th November – and Bruce also won the raffle – a very fitting birthday present.
All members of the Rotary Club of Bendigo have been invited by the Bendigo Youth Choir to attend a 'thank you' event next Wednesday, 15th November, in St. Andrews Uniting Church Hall, Myers Street, Bendigo at 7.00. This is to acknowledge Past President Glenn and the Club for their assistance in getting 15 excited choristers to New York to sing in Carnegie Hall on June 17th of this year. Young members of the choir will thank you profusely, entertain you with two or three songs and provide a scrumptious home-made supper. Please come along – we are deeply appreciative of your help. For catering purposes please contact me at email@example.com or Rosalie at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to attend.
A reminder that you must pre-purchase tickets for the Foundation Dinner on 30th November at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club - $35 each. Please contact Julie Sloan.
Thanks to all those members who volunteered for parking duties at the Bendigo Cup. It was a very successful fund-raiser.
Those who are working at the Swap Meeting will need an admittance card – please see Peter Reading who will supply one.
Early Bird Bookings for the Rotary Conference to be held in Warrnambool on the weekend of 16th - 18th March will be closing soon. Even at this early stage the two tours to see the beautiful Maremma dogs and the fairy penguins are full – so places are filling fast. Please make sure to get your spot confirmed.
Word of the week was ineffable – too great to be expressed in words – and it was so great that no one was able to express what it meant.
We send greetings and warm wishes to all those members of our club who are currently 'out of action'. You are always in our thoughts.
