Broadly Speaking 10 October 2017
WHAT A NIGHT! Tuesday's meeting was a Twilight Meeting held at the
Bendigo Club to support The Worlds Greatest Meal in support of Rotary's
EndPolio Now Campaign. Our Club joined with the Rotary Club of Bendigo
Strathdale and the room was filled with Presidents, Past Presidents, a former
Mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo, the current Mayor of the City of Greater
Bendigo, members and partners. There was a wonderful ambience in the room, a noisy buzz of convivial conversation and a worthy project which we were supporting.
Our two Clubs welcomed the Presidents of the Rotary Club of Bendigo South and
the Rotary Club of Sandhurst, making this a great inter-club event. We were shown a short video of the success of the vaccination program and told that we are …...................... this far away from complete eradication of polio. There
were only 11 cases reported in the world in the past year.
We enjoyed a sumptuous two-course meal and a stimulating address from
our Guest Speaker, Councillor Margaret O'Rourke who told us of the future
plans for Bendigo. And what positive, exciting plans they are.
There was a raffle which was generously supported, raising $517. With a contribution from the Bill Gates Foundation this grew to $1,551 – which means
we will be providing 10,340 vaccines in the effort to rid the world of polio.
There will be a further contribution from the evening which will add to that number. But wait.....there's more! On Thursday, 9th February, the Rotary
Club of Bendigo Strathdale is hosting a film night to raise further funds and we ask that you support this. The film is 'Murder on the Orient Express'
(See attached flyer) and all proceeds will be added to the funds raised at
our Dinner. How many innoculations? Watch this space.
Many thanks to Glenn and Pam who organised the night and ran a very tight
and happy ship – and thanks to all those who attended.
It was so successful that we will look towards more joint Club events.
Our member, Tilaka deZilva is holding a Sri Lankan Garden Party at her home,
28 Holmes Road, Bendigo on Sunday 29th October, from 1.00 – 4.00 pm and
a warm invitation is extended to all members to come and enjoy her beautiful
cooking. Tickets are $30 adults and $10 children and must be purchased before the event to assist with catering. Tilaka is a keen supporter
of the Bendigo Youth Choir – and all proceeds will be donated to the choir.
Please contact Tilaka or President Valerie if you would like to purchase a ticket.

I am writing this to the welcome sound of heavy rain on the roof.
